Where is Medicine 2.0 at Stanford?
- Medicine 2.0 will take place on the campus of Stanford University School of medicine, at the LKSC Conference center.
- The address of the LKSC Conference center, including directions for driving can be found by clicking here.
- If you are driving to Stanford, we highly recommend that you park in Parking Structure 5, go to the top level and purchase a scratcher parking card ($5) from our Medicine 2.0 parking attendant (hours from 6AM-9AM on Friday Sept 16). Parking is free on Sept 17-18, 2011.
- If you plan to drive and need a parking scratcher, we highly recommend you email us to let us know so we can reserve one for you. Email us.
- If you plan to drive: a) please arrive early, b) please plan a 5-10 minute walk to the LKSC conference venue, c) plan to purchase a parking scratcher on Sept 16, 2011, d) plan for some possible frustration in getting lost walking on campus (we don't encourage driving unless you have to!). We have included lots of maps (click here, and here), but we want you to know that our campus is very large and some people find it difficult to navigate.

- Yes, absolutely, though it is a bit of a schlep.

When is Medicine 2.0 at Stanford? [TOP]
- Medicine 2.0 at Stanford is a three day event, from Sept 16-18, 2011.
- Tickets can be purchased for the one-day Stanford Summit @ Medicine 2.0 on Sept 16 or for the World Congress on Sept 17-18.
Where can I stay while I'm at Medicine 2.0 at Stanford? [TOP]
- We have arranged discounted room rates at the Palo Alto Sheraton and Palo Alto Westin Hotels.
- Online discounted reservations closed August 15, but we are told that discounts are still available if booked through the telephone (ask for the Medicine 2.0 discount). Call 650-328-2800 for the Palo Alto Sheraton and 650-321-4422 for the Palo Alto Westin Hotels.
How do I get to Medicine 2.0 at Stanford? [TOP]
- Main airports serving Stanford University include the San Francisco International Airport and the San Jose International Airport. Each is approximately the same distance from our campus.
- We strongly recommend that our guests purchase bus shuttle tickets from the Palo Alto Sheraton or Westin Hotels and the conference venue. Parking is difficult and limited on campus on Sept 16, 2011 and free of charge on Saturday and Sunday Sept 17-18, 2011.
What is the Difference between the Stanford Summit and the World Congress? [TOP]
- The Stanford Summit @ Medicine 2.0 is a one-day All Star event on Friday Sept 16, 2011, featuring over 20 leading speakers from academia and industry who will discuss the future of medicine at the intersection of emerging technologies.
- The World Congress on Social Media and Web 2.0 is a 2-day event on Saturday Sept 17-18, 2011 featuring international speakers presenting the latest research data and findings on the use of social technologies for medicine. Presentations were judged through an international peer-review process.
What is the Dress Code at Medicine 2.0 @ Stanford
- Keeping with the best traditions of Silicon Valley at the Stanford community, we encourage business casual wear to ensure the comfort of our guests.
- For men, a suit and tie is not necessary. Khakis, slacks, shirts with button down collars, and perhaps a sport coat (only if you want). Jeans are OK (Steve Jobs wears them!).
- For women, skirts, pants, blouses and dresses in comfortable fabric - something appropriate to the office environment. Jeans are OK (Steve Jobs wears them!).
Transportation between Sheraton/Westin Palo Alto Hotel and Airport [TOP]
The two closest airports to Stanford University are the San Francisco International Airport (SFO, http://www.flysfo.com/) and San Jose Airport (SJC, http://www.sjc.org/). They are 22 miles and 16.5 miles away, respectively. Various options for traveling between these airports and the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel are given below. Please note that the Palo Alto Sheraton and Westin are sister hotels and are located together on the same property directly adjacent to each other.
San Francisco Airport (SFO)
Option 1: Taxi
- Call Yellow Cab at (800) 595-1222 or (650) 321-1234 and a taxi will come to pick up at Sheraton. The following information should be given on booking: Name, Airline, Flight # and Departure Time.
- The designated taxi zones at SFO are located at the roadway Center Islands on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level of all terminals.
- Total Cost: Approximately $45 to $50 each way per taxi.
- Estimated Time: 40 min.
Option 2: Door-to-Door Airport Shuttle
Call one of the companies listed below and a shuttle van will come to pick up at Sheraton. Reservations are required and should be made at least one day in advance.

The shuttle pickup stops at SFO are located on the Departures/Ticketing Level at the roadway Center Island outside all terminals. No reservations are required. (However, reservations are recommended for service after 11:00pm.)
Total Cost: Approximately $22 to $27 each way per person ($8 each additional person).
Estimated Time: 40 min.
Option 3: Caltrain + BART
From Sheraton:
- Take the northbound train from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Millbrae Caltrain station. ($3.00)
- Transfer from Caltrain to BART and take the northbound train to the SFO BART station. ($1.50)
- From SFO, follow the above directions in reverse.
- Total Cost: $4.50
- Estimated Time: 50 min. (excluding waiting time for trains; please go http://www.caltrain.com/ and http://www.bart.gov/ for schedules)
Option 4: SamTrans
From Sheraton:
- Take the Marguerite (Line A, Line B or Midnight Express on weekdays; Shopping Express or Midnight Express on weekends) to the Stanford Shopping Center.
- Take the #KX bus to SFO. ($3.50) The locations of the bus stops are as follows:
- Terminal 2: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level, Roadway Center Island
- Terminal 3: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level, curbside adjacent to Courtyard 4
- International Terminal: Level 1 at Courtyard A and curbside adjacent to Courtyard G
- From SFO, follow the above directions in reverse.
- Total Cost: $3.50

The car rental counters at SFO are located on the 4th floor of the Rental Car Center. The Center can be accessed from the Airport terminals via the Airtrain Blue Line, which operates 24 hours every day.
San Jose Airport (SJC)
Option 1: Taxi
Call Yellow Cab at (800) 595-1222 or (650) 321-1234 and a taxi will come to pick up at Sheraton. The following information should be given on booking: Name, Airline, Flight # and Departure Time.
The taxi zones at SJC are located at Terminal A and Terminal C.
Total Cost: Approximately $35 to $40 each way per taxi

Option 2: Door-to-Door Airport Shuttle
Call one of the companies listed below and a shuttle van will come to pick up at Sheraton. Reservations are required and should be made at least one day in advance.

Terminal A: Ground Transportation Center located south of the Terminal Garage

Option 3: Caltrain + VTA Airport Flyer
From Sheraton:
Take the southbound train from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Santa Clara Caltrain station. ($3.00)
Take the VTA #10 Airport Flyer. (Free)
From SJC, follow the above directions in reverse.
Total Cost: $3.00

Option 4: VTA
From Sheraton:
Take the #22 or #300 bus from the Palo Alto Caltrain station to the Santa Clara Caltrain station. ($1.50)

Each terminal in SJC has a clearly marked Rental Car Shuttle bus stop. Rental Car Shuttles run between the terminals and the Rental Car Center every 10 minutes. Daily hours of operation are 6:00am to midnight.
General Driving Directions to Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel
From Highway 101 North & South:
Exit at Embarcadero Road west.
Follow Embarcadero Road to El Camino Real. Turn right.
Stay in the right lane. (Follow sign for Stanford University / University Avenue.) Sheraton is on the right.
From Highway 280 North:
Exit at Sand Hill Road east.
Follow Sand Hill Road to El Camino Real. Turn right.
Stay in the right lane. At the intersection with Palm Drive / University Avenue, turn left.
Cut immediately into the right lane. The parking lot of Sheraton is on the right.
From Highway 280 South:
Exit at Page Mill Road east.
Follow Page Mill Road to El Camino Real. Turn left.
Upon Embarcadero Road, keep right. (Follow sign for Stanford University / University Avenue.) Sheraton is on the right.
