Yes, we get to do fun stuff :-)

WE ARE AN AWARD-WINNING INNOVATION LABORATORY.

The Anesthesia Informatics and Media (AIM) Lab at Stanford University was founded in 2007 by Dr. Larry Chu, a practicing anesthesiologist and pioneer in the field of anesthesia informatics.

Our projects span education, clinical informatics, and mobile computing in medicine. No matter what we do, we aim to innovate user-centered solutions to healthcare IT. Our work has been honored by funding and awards from the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality, IARS, Society for Technology in Anesthesia, and Medicine 2.0 among others. In 2010 we were invited by President Obama to co-produce a workshop at the Whitehouse to inform patient-centered future of the AllofUs initiative at the NIH.

Don’t design for everyone. It’s impossible.
All you end up doing is designing something that makes everyone unhappy.

OUR WORK SAYS A LOT ABOUT US. PASSION DRIVES OUR APPROACH.

We’re physicians. We are passionate about medicine at the intersection of emerging health information technologies. We seek to create IT solutions to improve medical education, healthcare practice, and the engagement of patients in their own care.

Groundbreaking Projects in Medical Education and Practice

Our work has advanced learning for medical students and residents through virtual reality surgical simulations, AI-assisted learning platforms, and other digital education tools. We’ve also developed clinical decision support systems, patient monitoring apps, operating room management programs, and other solutions to directly improve patient care and hospital operations.

The AIM Lab’s projects are driven by our team’s dedication to transforming medicine through technology. As physicians ourselves, we understand the challenges in healthcare and strive to create better systems for providers and patients alike.

Training Future Leaders in Healthcare Innovation

Through the Stanford Anesthesia Informatics Fellowship, the AIM Lab offers one of the only programs in the country designed to help physicians gain the skills needed to lead impactful healthcare innovations. Fellows complete real-world projects under our guidance while also pursuing academic study in clinical informatics, computer science, and management. It is an interdisciplinary training experience that sets graduates up for leadership roles guiding healthcare technology development.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork and Collaboration

None of our projects would be possible without the combined expertise of our diverse team. Clinicians, engineers, designers, project managers, and more come together to bring a mix of perspectives that enhances our creative process. Our shared passion for innovating unites team members across disciplines, and the AIM Lab culture fosters an energizing, collaborative spirit.
